BUENOS AIRES is going to be, yet again, the host of the 3rd annual LatinArab film festival.

It is a 10-day celebration of cultural, political, and human exchange.聽Organized by the NGO Cine F茅rtil, the festival is consolidating as a South-South cross-cultural think tank.

LatinArab will have a competitive selection of Arab feature films and another of Arab short films. At the same time there will be a competitive selection of Latin American films which somehow relate to the Arab world (a big percentage of Latin Americans have Arab ancestors so it is not so hard to imagine) called PANORAMA LatinArab.聽

Featured Artist: Antonio Lopez

19 Aug

Here we are at Monday again!!!

Today鈥檚 featured artist is pretty rad. It seems that in the the late 60鈥檚 and well into the 70鈥檚 Antonio Lopez was THE fashion illustrator.聽 Not only did he draw wonderfully colourful and evocative illustrations for big time magazines such as Warhol鈥檚 Interview, Harper鈥檚 Bazaar, Elle, and The New York Times, he also discovered models Grace Jones and Tina Chow. Apparently he KNEW a beautiful face when he saw it!! Lopez was born in Peurto Rico and then moved to New York with his family at a young age. He attended an art high school and then went off to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Here are some examples of his wonderful work below!

I am so inspired by his colour palette!

Have an awesome聽 Monday! Check back in on Wednesday鈥 have some sketches to share!

Lady Gaga, who? A tribute to Anna Piaggi

Italian fashion icon (journalist, writer, avant-garde fashionista) has passed away today at 81. Her friend the designer Karl Lagerfeld has once said:

“She dresses the way one plays a role. She’s a great performer, but she is also the author of the play.”

C贸rdoba Capital, Argentina

4 Jul

I took a very much needed weekend off work and travelled to the city of C贸rdoba, 700 kms from Buenos Aires.

It was a weekend full of wonderful activities and in a city that absolutely surprised me. I had been there 10 years ago and fallen in love with the聽Jesuit聽estancias; there has been a lot of work done in the city centre since then and it looks fantastic; not forgetting there are a lot of fun things to do.

Here’s a recap:

First we went to this beautiful Arab-style castle…

Montserrat castle in Unquillo (a few kms from the center); where we did some shooting for an upcoming spot for the next LatinArab Film Festival.

The next day we went to an asado and these were there to accompany the arab coffee… hhmmmm 馃檪

Awamat – Crisp doughnut balls (Lebanon); courtesy of our host, Betty.

At night I went for a walk around the town…

Cathedral church of C贸rboda

Minidada; a bar/fair in the artsy part of town (a must).

This gorgeous barber chair decorates the entrance of a bar.

And finally, this is where I spent a lot of time:

Cineclub Hugo del Carril; a beautiful place for film lovers to find alternatives to mainstream cinema. Go check it out. (that’s me by the way)

Train, Mechanical (2003-2009) by Paul McCarthy at the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires

So I just saw this on Saturday. It was within the exhibit called Bye, Bye, American Pie at the MALBA; which featured the work of seven contemporary American artists:Jean-Michel Basquiat, Larry Clark, Nan Goldin, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Cady Noland and Paul McCarthy. The show was curated by Phillip Larratt-Smith; who curated anotheer big exhibit in Buenos Aires about Louise Bourgeois at Fundaci贸n PROA last year.

Loved the show, really. I appreciate the work of all of these artists and really enjoyed their company on Saturday.聽

More on my thoughts later this week; I’m still聽processing聽the experience.

One last thing… Is it wrong for me to find the pigs’ skin super cute? I just wanted to stretch those bellies!聽

I’ll be back…
